A1 Too often, volume is not included in reading intervention plans. As a result, kids who need to read the most read the least. We build volume by ensuring all children have daily access, choice, and time to read! #G2Great

A2 Before designing an intervention plan, take a close look at the child’s independent reading life. How much is the child actually reading each day? #G2great
— Suzanne Carroll (@SuzanneRCarroll) June 4, 2021
A2 Skillful reading is the goal. there is no real reason to teach skills and strategies if kids are not given time to read. We provide instrction so kids can practice and apply what they learn by reading text they can and want to read every day. #g2great

A3 When kids read with success, they enjoy it and do it more often. As they read, they gain skill and confidence. They develop reading identities. Entering kids on this virtuous cycle by ensuring they have high-success reading experiences is Job #1. #G2Great
— Annie Ward (@AnnieTWard) June 4, 2021
A3 It all begins with confidence. We've never met a young reader who does not want to learn to read. But when they sit down next to someone reading harry Potter and they don't yet have letter recognition, confidence erodes & the downward spiral accelerates #g2great

A4 Book match relentlessly, provide time to read, and monitor investment in the book. Engagement with compelling books is a key to building reading volume. #G2great
— Maggie Hoddinott (@MaggieHoddi) June 4, 2021
A4 Curate classroom libraries carefully, seeking out books with high kid-appeal. Take pains as @KelseyLCohen does here to procure irresistible bks and put them directly into kids’ hands, particularly kids who may not have reliable access streams outside of school. #G2Great pic.twitter.com/SahY2GPwzI

A4 Share our own literate lives frequently, both our passion for reading and its challenges. Kids need to know that we read and the many reasons we read. And that we too meet challenges when reading. #g2great

A5 All readers, and especially striving readers, deserve to feel enthrallment! When readers deeply connect with a book of their own choosing that they can read successfully, reading becomes a “want to” instead of a “have to.” #G2Great
— Suzanne Carroll (@SuzanneRCarroll) June 4, 2021
A5 Enthrallment is the ultimate volume-builder! When kids are invested in their book, they engage deeply, making meaning on page after page. As they go, they’re propelled along the virtuous cycle of reading success. #G2great

A6 Knowing kids in the round tops the list for a reason! Strong relationships help you match kids with books, but more importantly helps them feel safe, motivated, and ready to take risks in their learning. #G2great
— Maggie Hoddinott (@MaggieHoddi) June 4, 2021
A6 Too often striving readers are pulled out during independent reading time and miss it entirely. We ensure that all kids get time to read independently every single day. The more kids read, the better they read and the more kids read the smarter they get. #g2great https://t.co/zpEAij4vUJ

A7 Book matching and book procurement are a dynamic duo! Help students find a book they can and want to read, and put that book in their hands! #G2great
— Suzanne Carroll (@SuzanneRCarroll) June 4, 2021
A7 Volume-building interventions supercharge your reading instruction by providing kids with opportunities to put into practice the skills and strategies you’ve taught. The first and most important step is to know kids as people. #G2great

A8 Assessing a student’s reading volume gives the student a voice. Find out about their reading likes and dislikes, what gets in the way of their reading, and what goals they want to set for themselves as readers. #G2Great

A8 Start with striving readers and make their independent reading lives a priority in addition to other interventions. Often, we reserve volume-building strategies for already proficient readers. #G2great
