Despite early school closures and extracurricular camps being cancelled in many parts of the country, families and educators are still making literacy a priority for students of all ages with the reimagined Scholastic Summer Read-a-Palooza program.
In fact, this week students hit a big reading milestone—they unlocked a donation of 75,000 print books for kids with limited or no access to books. With the goal of unlocking 100,000 total books in July, kids will continue to create and keep Reading Streaks™ in Scholastic Home Base, the free digital destination which offers full books, live events, and games in a moderated and safe online community. Once kids unlock the entire book donation, United Way Worldwide, the world’s largest privately funded nonprofit, will distribute the books to select locations where access to more reading materials is needed most.
It’s not too late to encourage students in your school or district community to join the program. In addition to helping increase access to books, Scholastic Summer Read-a-Palooza helps kids:
- Read free digital books. Exclusive to the summer zone, kids will have access to select full ebooks in their entirety.
- Share reading progress. Kids will be able to create and print individualized reading reports summarizing their reading progress. These easy-to-download and printable reports can be shared with teachers or parents to show reading accomplishments.
- Earn personal reading milestones. Kids will be able to earn accolades ranging from bronze, silver, gold, and diamond levels for their reading streak progress while collecting summer-specific accessories to dress up their avatar.
- Join a community of readers. The summer zone offers kids a safe social platform to interact with friends and make new companions along the way. Through this summer reading community kids will share and discover the joy of stories and help provide books to their peers with limited or no access.
