Why we should encourage children to read what they want

Last week Jess introduced us to Jeffrey Wilhelm and Michael Smith, the authors of Reading Unbound: Why Kids Need to Read What They Want—and Why We Should Let Them.  In Reading Unbound, Jeff and Michael explore the educational benefits and often-rigorous intellectual and psychological work involved in reading books like vampire stories, horror, fantasy, romance and dystopian fiction.

As Jess noted in her post, during their presentation hosted at Scholastic Headquarters, Michael stated, "You can't make a judgment about how a reader is going to engage with a text based on the text itself." We thought this was an interesting statement and caught up with Michael after his presentation to discuss this topic.
